Common questions
What should I use for expected medical charges?
Use the allowed amounts from last year’s EOBs, not what you paid. If you have a planned surgery or birth, add its allowed amount. If you genuinely do not know, run the comparison twice: once at zero and once at the worst case.
Why does the worst case matter more than the expected case?
The expected case is an input, while the in-network out-of-pocket maximum is a plan term. Premiums plus that maximum is a useful modeled stress case, but it can exclude noncovered services, many out-of-network charges, premium changes, and other costs outside the federal maximum.
